How relevant are websites in 2021? Given that social media is the main platform for conversation and communication between brands and their audience, do you really need a website? The answer is YES you absolutely do!
Think of your website as your business’s online hub, and your social accounts should be used to drive traffic. There’s no arguing that you can build your entire business on social media platforms but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.
Don’t get me wrong there are are some advantages to a social media presence:
- Its FREE
- It enables a more personal method of communication
- Enables user-generated content
- Greater reach
- You can monitor your competitors engagement
- Requires little-to-no technical expertise
- Optimised for search engines
The issue with just relying on social media platforms for your business is you have NO control.
What happens if the platform you run your business on changes the rules, becomes unpopular (remember Myspace) or worse disappears completely. Think of social media as renting a shop space from a landlord. What happens when the landlord evicts you or demolishes the property? All those likes, followers and customers will just disappear.
The only way as a business owner to have full control over your online presence is by having your own website. As long as you keep paying for it, it will remain live (the same cannot be said about social media platforms). Just look at how Facebook banned news in Australia a few months back.
A website is also a really important tool in building your business credibility, customers expect a business to have a website.
Social media platforms are definitely important and should have a place in your business, but they should be used in addition to a website and not instead of. If you currently only have socials for your business and are thinking about a website we would love to have a quick chat with you.
